One of the first questions parents ask after a speech delay diagnosis or an initial assessment is: "How long will this take?"
Whether your child is receiving early intervention for a speech delay or working on complex articulation, everyone wants to see progress as quickly as possible. However, because every child’s brain is wired differently, there is no "one-size-fits-all" answer.
Instead of a fixed date, we look at the specific factors that influence the required duration of speech therapy and how we can better support your child’s speech development.
Factors That Influence the Therapy Timeline
The length of time a child spends in therapy depends on several variables. Understanding these can help set realistic expectations for your family’s journey.
1. The Nature and Severity of the Challenge
A child working on a single speech sound (like a "lisp") will typically require less time than a child with a significant speech delay, childhood apraxia of speech, or communication challenges stemming from autism or Down syndrome.
2. The Age of Intervention
This is where early intervention is critical. Research shows that because of neuroplasticity; younger brains are more adaptable. Starting therapy early (often before age three or four) can lead to faster outcomes and even reduce the need for long-term support later in life.
3. Frequency of Sessions
Consistency is key. A child attending therapy once a week will generally meet their milestones faster than a child who attends sporadically. Think of it like learning a musical instrument; the more consistent the practice, the sooner the song comes together.
Turbocharged Learning: The Power of Generalisation at Home and School
If your child spends 1 hour per a week with a speech and language therapist (SLT), that represents less than 1% of their waking hours. There are many small steps you can take in the remaining 99% that will significantly contribute to their learning and development.
The effectiveness of speech therapy is exponentially boosted when parents reinforce concepts at home. At Speech Bubbles, we encourage parents or caregivers to sit in during sessions to watch how we guide your child in achieving their speech goals.
It doesn't mean you need to act like a therapist all day. Instead, it’s about:
Integrating goals into daily life:Â Practicing signs or sounds during bath time or grocery shopping. Our SLTs will typically provide you with a couple of activities that you can try with your child at home, to practice what was learnt during the session.
Consistent modelling:Â Using the techniques your SLT shows you during your sessions. These techniques could include creating more communication opportunities, how to get better eye contact, or even how to help a child regulate and reduce impulsiveness.
Creating a communication-rich environment:Â Reducing screen time and increasing face-to-face interaction.
Studies show that children whose parents are actively involved in their learning journey reach their communication goals significantly faster than those who rely on therapy sessions alone.
How Do We Know When Therapy is Finished?
In our clinic, the goal of speech therapy isn't perfection, but functional communication. We typically look at three aspects before discussing graduation:
Goal Mastery:Â The child has met the specific developmental milestones set at the start of the programme.
Generalisation: The child is using their new skills not just at the clinic, but at school, home, and the playground.
Self-Correction: The child has the awareness to notice and fix their own communication slips without prompting.
Final Thoughts
While we can't give you a specific number of weeks or months, we can promise this: Every session is a step toward your child finding their voice. Whether the journey is a sprint or a marathon, the focus remains on giving your child the tools they need to connect with the world.
If you’re concerned about your child’s speech and language development, don't wait. Early intervention is the most powerful tool we have. Contact our Speech Bubbles centre today (WhatsApp: +65 88034276) for a consultation.
